Struck by Lightning. On August 4th, 1942, Lieutenants Stan Long and Ken Ambrose of the 54th Fighter Squadron intercepted and
shot down two Japanese Kawanishi flying boats over the island of Atka, scoring the first P-38 victories of World War II. The Lightnings were escorted
by a B-17 bomber that provided navigation for the long patrol down the Aleutians. The twin engines of the P-38 were essential for the missions
being flown over long distances and in poor weather.
